  • College....here I come!!

I am to start college January 14th! I am so pumped!! I have never ventured this much-treaded path. Any hints, tips, secrets....? I want it all from all who want to share! I should state that I am a single-mother, only plan to work 2 days a month, and be a full-time student. I am hoping to achieve my Associates in Applied Science (AAS). Then, upon completion of those courses, I plan to take a sort of rushed RN program. If I hit it hard, I should be able to get it done in a year. So, needless to say, I am going to a community college - so I'm not doing the whole dorm thing. So, don't waste your advice on that. :0) I like advice, just so long as I can apply it.

Speaking of goals and commitments, I need to retire for the evening *yawn*. I am pooped! Big work week ahead. Those who prayed for the taking of my placement test to be successful - THANK YOU!! I scored so well. I thank my God for hearing our prayers and being so faithful to answering them as well.

Goodnight my Xanga friends!!   -New Noob on the Block       "Beene, out!"

Gratz - good luck w/ college! I'm so proud of you!!!

Just noticed you said you would be finishing your RN deal w/in a year . . . that seems really short. Is that right?

Where do you want to go to RN school?

My advice would be to carve out some study time every day, even when you don't need it yet. Make it a habit & you won't have to stress so hard to "find time" to study later. Ideal times: between classes, after kids are in bed, over lunch. When you have a break b/w classes, find a study area at your college or a local coffee shop. Just make sure you are able to focus on what you are doing instead of who is around you. Practice as soon as classes start (before you have homework) with a good book to see if you can focus on the book in the place you have chosen as a study place.

Have highlighters on hand at all times. Highlight things you will need to refresh your mind before tests - i.e. formulas, definitions, points of interest. That way, the day before a test, you can pick up your book & flip through for highlighted portions to jog your memory. If you find you don't remember the "whys" behind the highlighted section, THEN proceed to re-read the chapter. The highlighting will just keep you from re-reading the entire book when you go back to study. AND, TAKE NOTES IN CLASS. You may never go back & read them (I hardly ever did), but just writing the high points down will help you remember them. Also - DO NOT FRET ABOUT YOUR HANDWRITING - this is not a time to practice your prettiest writing . . . it's all about getting the info down the fastest way possible that you can read later.

Pack healthy, light snacks (think carrot sticks & grapes) so you won't be tempted to buy whatever high-carb snacks you find to give you a quick pick-me-up. It will be better on your pocket-book, your hips, and your mind. Also, pack your lunch the night before & bring it with you. You will be able to "work through lunch" - i.e. study - without having to find someplace to eat, stand in line, pay, find a place to scarf the food down, and drive back to class. You will save an hour a day.

Above all - enjoy. This will be a very fun time in your life. College (with or without the dorm experience) is a time that most people really enjoy. By that I mean that it is the only time we can completely focus on expanding our minds, reasoning, philosophizing, and reading tons and tons of books!

I wish someone would have told me all of these things before I started college!!! Love you & I'm sure you will do SO great!

Wow, I can't say how pumped I am for you.  College can be so hard, but SO much fun.  Especially given how much you love learning new things.  As far as advice goes, it sounds like Michele hooked you up perfectly.  She always was more responsible than me, so I'd listen to her.  I really can't say much except that you're a Beene, you're going to find it a LOT easier to learn things and remember them for tests than the students who will be struggling around you, but don't let it get to your head.  That's how I ended up with a "C" average my first semester in college.  Oh, and find a way to be interested in every class you take, even the gay ones.  It really helps for memory retention and it makes your workload something you'll actually look forward to.  I usually read up a bit on the history of the field to pique my interest.  Like Geology...classic gay class.  I started reading about the history of geology and the more exciting parts (like volcanic science and whatnot) and it really helped keep my mind motivated to learn.

*shrug*  I don't know, that's just me.  I'm not worried even for a moment that you'll do well.  You're brilliant, and I know you're more motivated than any other person I know to learn, so all I can say is I love you and "bon courage"!

    Sincerely
--That one guy that you used to live near--

I like what Jeremiah said, "Find a way to be interested in the class you are taking". I LOVE LOVE School and I think my eagerness to go learn has been what has kept me having almost all A's in grad school. You already seem to have that edge though so I'm sure you'll be fine. And you have Beene blood so you'll prolly sail through. I'm SOOOO excited for you, and jealous, I won't be able to go back to school until May *sigh*. But congrats for you! Maybe you, me, and JEremiah can have study nights when we are all back in school. (studying different things of course). LOVE YOU!!!!! WELCOME TO XANGA!

Hey girl!  I'm SO excited you finally joined xanga!  You'll love it on here!  I agree with every ones advice.  My biggest advice in college is to not wait!  So many of my friends would put off their homework cause they didn't want to work on it, and then they would be STRESSED before a project/test.  I'm not saying I always did it, but if you get an assignment, work on it the first chance you get.  Then, when you are done the weight of that is off of you and you can relax!  (Not like there is tons of time for that but it helps, a lot!).  The biggest advice is to not put off what you could be doing right then.  You are SO smart and will do fine!  I'm SO excited for you!  Love ya girl!

Hey so when you start a new xanga your are supposed to update it... =) just thought I'd let you know!

  • Syrup6

Hey girl!  I was excited I found you on here... but not so excited for no updates!  How are things?  I'll be out your way this weekend, I'll see you before I leave town :)

The only advice I have is to keep your life balanced.  Know your limits and don't try to be too ambitious in exceeding them.  That was my downfall in college.  I couldn't say no to social things and I was doing too many other things (working and being in a band).  Don't be afraid to take it slower if that's what is best for everything you have going on (work, family, love interest).  Take care hon and congrats!
